The 1042 is the flagship moving magnet cartridge in Goldring’s range. It carries a nude natural-diamond Gyger S line-contact stylus on an aluminium cantilever and a frequency range out to 51 kHz. Output is 5 mV and the stylus is user-replaceable. Sold as a single cartridge.

About the Goldring 1042 Moving Magnet Cartridge

The 1000 Series is Goldring’s hand-built moving magnet range: a rigid one-piece Pocan body, a mu-metal shield against hum, formerless coils and an Alnico V magnet. Like the rest of the series, it has an owner-replaceable stylus carrier.

Goldring describe the Gyger S profile as a line-contact shape that resembles the record cutting head more closely than earlier designs. Its extended contact with the groove wall is what Goldring credit for fine resolution of small groove detail, an accurate midrange and less sibilance. Equivalent tip mass is just 0.35 mg.

It is the choice for listeners who want the most from a moving magnet design. It works with a standard MM phono input, and Goldring recommend tonearms of 5–25 g effective mass.

Questions about the Goldring 1042 Moving Magnet Cartridge

Is it sold as a pair?

No. It is one cartridge, which is all a turntable needs: it plays both stereo channels.

Can I replace the stylus myself?

Yes. The 1042 has a user-replaceable stylus carrier, and Goldring make a replacement stylus for it.

Which input do I connect it to?

It is a moving magnet cartridge, so connect it to the MM or “phono” input of your amplifier or phono stage. Goldring advise using that input only.

Will it fit my tonearm?

Goldring list a standard 12.7 mm (0.5 in) fixing centre, which is the usual spacing on most headshells and tonearms. Tell us your deck and tonearm and we will confirm it fits.
