Goldring 1012GX Moving Magnet Cartridge

A hand-built moving magnet cartridge with a nude Gyger II diamond stylus.

The 1012GX puts a nude Gyger II diamond (a fine-line elliptical with a 6 µm small radius) on an aluminium cantilever, in Goldring’s one-piece Pocan body. Output is 5 mV and the stylus is user-replaceable. Sold as a single cartridge.

About the 1012GX Moving Magnet Cartridge

The 1000 Series is Goldring’s hand-built moving magnet range, with a rigid Pocan body, mu-metal shielding against hum and a very light Alnico V magnet. Every model has a stylus carrier you can replace yourself.

The 1012GX uses the Gyger II nude diamond. Goldring say its fine-line shape gives smooth, extended highs and low distortion, and because it fills the groove more fully than an ordinary elliptical, it tracks well and is gentler on records. Frequency range runs to 42 kHz.

Output is 5 mV, so it works with a standard MM phono input. Goldring recommend tonearms of 5–25 g effective mass.

Questions about the 1012GX Moving Magnet Cartridge

Is it sold as a pair?

No. It is one cartridge, which is all a turntable needs: it plays both stereo channels.

Can I replace the stylus myself?

Yes. The 1000 Series has a user-replaceable stylus carrier, and Goldring make a replacement stylus for the 1012GX.

Which input do I connect it to?

It is a moving magnet cartridge, so connect it to the MM or “phono” input of your amplifier or phono stage. Goldring advise using that input only.

Will it fit my tonearm?

Goldring list a standard 12.7 mm (0.5 in) fixing centre, which is the usual spacing on most headshells and tonearms. Tell us your deck and tonearm and we will confirm it fits.
