The RS1 was Grado’s first wooden headphone. This Classic Series version has housings of cocobolo, hemp and maple, a 50 mm X2 driver, a leather headband and a Signature Silver cable.

About the RS1 Classic Open-Back Headphones
The Classic Series is Grado’s 2026 core range of open-back, hand-built Brooklyn headphones. It is built around the X2 driver platform and takes over from the earlier X-series models. The RS1 carries a name that goes back more than three decades, to the first wooden headphone in the Grado lineup.
The housing is built from three woods, cocobolo, hemp and maple, which Grado picked for their different damping and density. The 50 mm X2 driver is tuned for midrange detail and immediacy, and L cushions give a focused, forward sound. The Signature Gold headband assembly uses a genuine leather strap with white stitching and a spring band for adjusting the fit.
Open-back headphones are for quiet rooms, since they let sound escape. The RS1 rewards a good headphone amplifier and well-recorded music.

Questions about the RS1 Classic Open-Back Headphones
Is the RS1 the same as the older RS1x?
It is the Classic Series version of the RS1, with Grado’s newer X2 driver platform. It takes over from the earlier X-series model.
Is every pair different?
Wood varies in grain and colour, so no two pairs will look exactly alike.
Do I need a headphone amplifier?
At 38 ohms and 99.8 dB it is easy to drive, but a dedicated headphone amplifier or a good DAC will bring out more of its detail.
